This painting was signed with the artist's conjoined initials TS and dated 1833 on the reverse before lining.

William Brown was a Philadelphia merchant engaged in the China Trade. He owned five clipper ships. According to Sully's Register, this painting was started on May 22, 1833 and was completed on June 6, 1833. Sully charged $100 for it.
