This painting was signed T.W. Whitredge (sic), dated Cincinnati 1843, and inscribed with title before lining. It is one of the earliest known works by the artist, who lived and worked in Cincinnati, from 1840 until 1849 when he went abroad to study in Europe. In 1855, the artist changed the spelling of his name from Whitredge to Whittredge.
