Lot Essay

This watercolor executed in 1897, is a study for a stained glass window entitled The Harpist, in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, West Roxbury, Massachusetts, which was completed the same year. Another window featuring the same theme in the reverse direction is in a church in Southampton.

This watercolor was executed in 1897, and will be included in the forthcoming publication by Yale University Press of the late Henry La Farge's catalogue raisonné of the works of John La Farge, completed by James L. Yarnall and Mary A. La Farge.
