A GILT AND RED LEATHER MANDARIN'S HAT BOX
18th/19th Century
Of cylindrical shape, formed of leather lacquered in red throughout, with the top and sides finely painted in gilt with five imperial dragons chasing flaming celestial pearls above waves within quatrefoil borders between which are painted scrolling cloud-forms, the gilt brass lockplate, latch and rear hinge finely etched with designs of intertwining foliage, the interior lined with yellow tissue, the whole set on a fitted circular softwood base, also lacquered in red
