Lot Essay

According to Carl Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, England, 1991, these particular scenes were "oft repeated" by Namcheong (1840-1870). The author also cites his palette and "play of light in the foreground water" as being "readily identifiable". He also mentions that "many of the paintings bear the small red stamp 'NAMCHEONG PAINTER' on one or more places on the back of the canvas or stretchers". In this particular case the labels are affixed to the back of the stretchers
