Lot Essay

Early figural bottles of jade are rare. For one other example in white jade depicting one of the Hehe twins, also carved with one foot raised, see Sotheby's New York, Important Chinese Snuff Bottles from the Collection of Janos Szekeres, Part I, October 27, 1986, lot 133. For a slightly later celadon jade example depicting Luihai, see Sotheby's Hong Kong, Fine Chinese Snuff Bottles from the Collection of Arthur Gadsby, May 2, 1991, lot 120. For a later example in jadeite depicting Liuhai, see Sotheby's New York, Fine Chinese Snuff Bottles, October 12, 1993, lot 227

This bottle can also be favorably compared to the ivory figural bottle of Luihai illustrated by Robert W. L. Kleiner, Chinese Snuff Bottles from the Collection of Mary and George Bloch, Hong Kong, 1987, Catalogue, p. 141, no. 192
