A GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESVARA
16th/17th Century
Cast in three parts, the deity seated in vajrasana on a rounded triangular lotus raised on a pedestal above an oblong, hexagonal galleried stand, the right hand held up in vitarkamudra, the left across the waist in abhayamudra, the face cast with a serene expression with downcast eyes and arched eyebrows continuing into the elegant nose above a small mouth, wearing an openwork tiara unusually containing an amphora, and loose robes open at the chest to reveal an elaborate bejeweled necklace above an inner garment tied around the waist, the hems of the outer robe decorated with a shallow-relief lotus border, the lotus base cast with three tiers of petals, pendent sashes at the corners and ribbons down the front, the underside with aquatic weeds and budding lotus stems, the base cast with the rippling waves of a pond surrounded by a fence and raised on six ruyi supports joined by a shaped apron, traces of red pigment and pale green pigment remaining
