Lot Essay

Life-size terracotta statues are rare, the present example being a rare survivor of the tradition of work on this scale. Parallels for the architectonic details, the Child's facial type and the fall of the Virgin's robe and veil may be found in the life-size painted stone Virgin and Child in a tabernacle attributed to Domenico di Paris in the Musée Jacquemart-André, Paris.
