Ananoff followed by Rosenberg and Cuzin date this drawing from the artist's first stay in Rome, at a time when Fragonard worked closely with Robert. A view of the same columns by Robert formerly in the P. Burley Collection, was sold in Paris 15 Nov. 1928, lot 113, fig. 3. A counterproof of the present sheet is at the Museum of Orleans.
