Lot Essay
Jean-Robert Ango, a friend of Fragonard and Robert, worked in Rome in the 1760s. The three of them shared the same patrons: the Abbé de Saint-Non, the Bailli de Breteuil, Watelet and the duc de la Rochefoucauld. In 1761, Ango is known to have travelled to Naples with Fragonard. Together they sketched copies after old master pictures. An even closer relationship is implied by the present drawing copied from Fragonard's preparatory study for Le Jeu de la Palette, now in the Graphische Sammlung in Staddschen Kunstinstitut of Frankfurt.
