Bruyn (op. cit., p. 52) dates the present lot to circa 1635-40. Although he states that the painting is presently in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden, as inventory 1040, it left that collection in 1925. This is confirmed by the omission of no. 1040 in the 1930 museum catalogue, (op. cit., p. 112). Bruyn (ibid.) notes that the attribution to Quellinus was first suggested by Burchard, who was probably familiar with the print by Schelte A. Bolswert which bears an inscription 'E. Quellinus pinxit'.
The frame bears the monogram and coat-of-arms of Augustus the Strong and probably dates from the 18th century when the painting was in the collection of the Gemäldegalerie
