Sold with a letter attached to a photograph from Ingvar Bergström dated Göteberg, May 25, 1983 as Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder and dateable to 1605 or shortly after. Professor Bergstrom, in a letter dated Göteborg, November 14, 1991, reaffirms the attribution to Bosschaert the Elder as well as the date. He also notes that the goldfinch to the right is a symbol of the passion of Christ, and the bird to the left with black wings is a symbol of the human soul.

Also sold with a photo certificate from Dr. Sam Segal dated Amsterdam, December 5, 1982, as Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder, circa 1619-20. However, in a letter dated November 20, 1991, Segal now believes the painting to be one of the earliest known works of Balthasar van der Ast (1593/4-1657), possibly with some collaborative assistance from Ambrosius Bosschaert I
