Maria Josepha was the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor, Joseph I. In 1719 she married Augustus III of Poland (1696-1763), whose reign witnessed one of the greatest periods of disorder in Poland.

Silvestre painted the King and Queen on several occasions, and many workshop replicas exist. A version of the present lot is recorded at Schloss Goluchow, Poland, engraved by J.G. Schmidt in 1773. There is also an engraving of the same date for a companion piece of the King. In the present painting Maria Josepha appears noticeably younger than in the engraving, suggesting an earlier date
