(13 7/16 x 9 3/4 in.), nineteenth-century tree calf, covers with gilt roll-tooled border, spine in six compartments, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, the remainder gilt, rebacked with original spine laid down, corners restored, endpapers renewed, tightly bound, covers rubbed, fore-margins of all leaves reinforced due to water damage, first title-leaf creased and with two short internal tears incurring no loss, cropping to woodcuts of part 2, fols. C2r, D1r and M2v, and part 3, S2r, fraying to fore-edges of P2-3 (part 3), a few very minor marginal tears, varying degrees of dampstaining to fore-margins and gutters at head and tail, occasional soiling. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, THE "EARLIEST CONNECTED WORK ON ARCHITECTURE IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE" (Fowler), mostly black letter, woodcut title borders (McKerrow and Ferguson 253-255), numerous woodcut illustrations, some full-page, with blank leaf at end of book 2.
