AN ITALIAN LATE BAROQUE GILTWOOD AND SCAGLIOLA CENTER TABLE
MID-18TH CENTURY, THE TOP EARLY 19TH CENTURY SIGNED DELLA VALLE
The circular top decorated with a central medallion depicting St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome surrounded by canted rectangular vingettes of the Duomo in Florence, the cathedral in Milan, St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice, and the basilica and campanile in Pisa within a scrolling foliate border, the base carved with two putti within a grape arbor astride rockwork on bun feet (re-gilt)--34in. (86cm.) high, 40½in. (102.5cm.) diameter
This table top was made by th Della Valle brothers who had a workshop in Leghorn which specialized in scagliola. A table top bearing the trade label of "Peter Della Valle & Brothers/Manufacturers and Painters of Scagliola/Num. 1473 per Porta Cappuccini/Leghorn" was sold at Christie's London, 24 April 1980, lot 135. Another, later table with a top signed F. Della Valle was exhibited at the Crystal Palace in 1851 and now is in the Gilbert Collection at the Los Angeles County Museum (A. Gonzalez-Palacios, The Art of Mosaics, rev. ed., 1982, no. 81, p. 180).
