In a letter dated September 13, 1989, Judith O'Toole states that the oval shape and two-tiered dark marble ledge with assorted fruits are typical characteristics of Roesen's Williamsport period, circa 1860-1872. The floral motif on the pedestal alludes to the artist's flower still lifes. A copy of this letter accompanies the lot.
