Penserosa was conceived by Rinehart in 1865. It was probably based on the bust of the same subject by Hiram Powers. At least five examples were carved at a cost of 60 pounds each. The present example, the sixth listed in the Wells/Rutledge catalogue of Rinehart's work, may be the same as example a. which is listed as having originally been commissioned for Mrs. Hugh McElderry of Baltimore.
