A SWORDSMITH'S SCHOOL TSUBA
LATE EDO/EARLY MEIJI PERIOD (CIRCA 1865-75), SIGNED YOSHITANE

The iron plate is a rounded rectangular shape and has a raised rim with a squared edge. The polished plate is carved in very high relief with a figure of the Buddha and a small branch of a tree. On the upper left a bird is inlaid in shibuichi. The reverse is decorated with the thatched roof of a farmhouse with a fishnet drying on the top. At the center of the plate is an inlaid gold two-story pagoda set amongst trees--height 8.3cm., width 7.7cm., thickness 4mm.

Lot Essay

This tsuba appears to be the work of Honjo Yoshitane II (fl. circa 1850-1890). He was the son of Yoshitane I (fl. circa 1828-1875). Little is known of his life, and his work is greatly overshadowed by that of his famous father.
