A SURUGA TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850), SIGNED INSHU JU SURUGA TAKAYUKI

The iron plate is formed as a tasseled hand drum. The surface details are carved in low relief and are embellished with gold nunome. The reverse of the plate depicts the subject in reverse. The sekigane are copper and are inserted in the top and bottom of the nakago-ana--height 7.8cm., width 7.5cm., thickness 4.5mm.

Lot Essay

The example of the late work of the Suruga school is equal in quality to the work of the earliest masters. Takayuki (fl. 1850-1870) was the second son of Takatsugu II and the younger brother of Takaoki (Takeyasu), the ninth master of the Suruga school.
