A SHOAMI SCHOOL KENJO TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1690)

The round iron plate is decorated with a gold nunome design which extends over the entire surface. The design depicts whole and incomplete oak leaf (kashi) crests and has scrolling karakusa between them. The design is repeated on the reverse. The edge is similarly decorated although the gilding has now been extensively rubbed in this area--height 8.4cm., width 8.3cm., thickness 5mm.

Lot Essay

This type of presentation tsuba was made just before and during the Genroku era (1688-1704) as a gift from one daimyo to another. The size, quality of inlay, and condition all confirm the excellent craftsmanship characteristic of this period.
