A BUSHU ITO SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1800), SIGNED BUSHU JU MASACHIKA SAKU

The oval iron plate is pierced and carved in the round with a design of peony blooms and leaves. The rim and edge is decorated in gold nunome-zogan with a key-fret design and there are other areas of gold nunome embellishing the leaves on both sides of the plate--height 7.9cm., width 7.5cm., thickness 6mm.

Lot Essay

This is a fine example of the work of Ito Masachika, the fifth master of the mainline Ito family. He was born in 1750 and there are dated examples of his work as late as the early 19th century. Characteristics of his work include the nunome key-fret design, found even on unsigned pieces, and the carving of the peony bloom, which is higher than the edge and the seppa-dai.
