The signature states that the plate was forged by Umetada (probably Shigeyoshi) and carved by Masatoshi in Edo. There are several artists of this name who worked in Edo at this time. From the style of the carving, this Masatoshi appears to belong to the Bushu Ito school, but there is no record of an Ito school Masatoshi. There is a Masatoshi in the Umetada school but he lived in Kyoto. It may be that the Kyoto Masatoshi carved the guard while visiting Edo.
