A JINGO SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1820-1850), SIGNED YATSUSHIRO JINGO SAKU

The square indented-corner (mokko) iron plate has a hammered surface and is inlaid in low grade shibuichi (rogin), shakudo, and brass with a sedge hat and cords and a large money bag. The reverse is similarly decorated with a fireman's hook and a tie cord--height 7.6cm., width 7.3cm., thickness at center 6mm., at edge 5mm.

Lot Essay

This design of a money bag and fireman's hook only appears in the work of the later masters of the Shimizu Jingo school. This signature is often attributed to the third Jingo master, but is probably that of the fourth master who died in 1823, or the fifth master who worked until circa 1850.
