AN OWARI SUKASHI TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1650)

The oval iron plate is pierced with a design of a clock gear (tokei). The rounded square rim has strong iron bones. The ryo-hitsu are plugged in shakudo--height 7.7cm., width 7.5cm., thickness 6.25mm.

Lot Essay

This is an early example of a famous design, named for its similarity to the gearing system found on early clocks. It seems more likely, however, that the design was taken from a slice of fruit.
