A NARA TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1750), SIGNED TSUNESHIGE
The rounded-corner square brass plate is carved in sunken relief (shishiaibori) with a design of Shoki and oni. The details are inlaid in gold and silver. The reverse is similarly decorated with a large pine tree. The rim is slightly raised and the edge is polished--height 7.3cm., width 6.8cm., thickness 5.25mm.
Lot Essay
Kawamura Tsuneshige was a student of Nara Shigetsugu. This tsuba is a good example of his mature style when he and his students made many of this type of guard.
