A SHONAI SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (GENROKU ERA 1688-1703), SIGNED ARICHIKA

The oval brass (shinchu) plate is carved and inlaid in gilt and soft metals with two gourdvine leaves, one carved and one inlaid, their veins are in shakudo and gold, with a silver flower and tendrils; the remainder of the surface is delicately hammered. The reverse is similarly carved and inlaid with deformed wheels (katawa kuruma) and a silver butterfly; the rim is worked in twisted-and-rolled-as-a-rope style (kuruma hineri kaeshi nawame)--height 8.9cm., width 8.3cm., thickness at center 6mm., at rim 6.5mm.

Lot Essay

Watanabe Arichika (Arinari) (1661-1742) was born in Shonai, Dewa Province. Together with his famous friend Tsuchiya Yasuchika I (1670-1744) he studied under Shoami Chinkyu [Yoshihisa] (fl. second half of the 17th century) and after founding his own school, he died in 1742. His school lasted six generations.
