A TAKAHASHI SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1775), SIGNED NANYETSU JU SHIGEMITSU

The rounded-corner rectangular plate is formed of six shakudo layers alternating with five copper layers. These have been carved with traditional scroll designs to imitate guri-bori lacquer. In this case the plate has been pierced with the design and easily reveals the alternating colors of the metal--height 7.2cm., width 6.6cm., thickness 5.25mm.

Lot Essay

Takahashi Shigemitsu (fl. second half of 18th century) specialized in this type of guard. Fully signed examples are rare. There were at least fourteen members of the Takahashi family but only four or five of them manufactured this type of tsuba.
