A KUNITOMO SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1700), SIGNED HAZAMA

The iron plate is dished from the edge to the center. It is decorated with sahari inlay of bamboo leaves and pine on the face and lotus pods on the reverse. The hitsu-ana was probably enlarged at a later date--height 8.2cm., width 8cm., thickness at center 3mm., at edge 7.5mm.

Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 151, dated April 15th, 1971.

This is a classic Hazama, Kunitomo family, guard. The dished plate is unusual as most examples are flat. The Hazama name was employed by several generations of artists of this family. The name is never used in combination with the artist's individual name.
