A KAGA TSUBA
MOMOYAMA PERIOD (CIRCA 1573-1600)

The round copper plate is decorated in shakudo, gold, and silver flush inlay with a design depicting a variety of flying insects. The face has three gold, two silver and two shakudo insects and the reverse has one silver and four shakudo insects. The hitsu-ana are original--height and width 7.2cm., thickness 4.5mm.

Lot Essay

This early copper-plate tsuba is an example of the Kaga style prior to the introduction of shakudo plate. The quality of the line carving on the inlay is equal to, if not better than, later Edo period examples.
