A KO-MINO TSUBA
MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1500)

The elongated four-lobed shakudo nanako plate is carved and inlaid with autumn flowers in relief. The flower heads and some leaves are overlaid with sheet gold leaf. The design is repeated on the reverse. The rim is squared and polished. The kogai-hitsu are plugged with shakudo--height 6.9cm., width 6.2cm., thickness 5.25mm.

Lot Essay

This is a classic Mino tsuba and demonstrates the origin of a design which was used over the next three hundred years. The quality of the present example was never matched later.
