A PAIR OF GOTO SCHOOL SHAKUDO MENUKI
MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1500), ATTRIBUTED TO GOTO SOJO

Each deep black shakudo fitting is formed as a playful monkey. The stylized animal has some surface carving and inlaid gold eyes--length 2.2cm., thickness 6mm.

Lot Essay

This fine pair of menuki appear to be the work of the mainline Goto school. Dr. Homma attributes the set to Goto Sojo (1461-1538), the second Shirobei mainline master.
