A GOTO SCHOOL KOZUKA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850), SIGNED GOTO MITSUHIRO AND KAO

The kozuka with shakudo nanako plate of very fine grain is decorated with the crest of the Okubo family in gold high relief. The case is of gold with filed (yasuri) ground and is signed on the reverse--length 9.7cm., width 1.5cm., thickness 7.25mm.

Lot Essay

Mitsuhiro was the art name employed by Goto Zejo (1788-1856). He was the first son of Goto Jujo (fourth Shichiroemon branch line master of the Goto school) and the elder brother of Goto Ichijo (1791-1876). He was adopted by Goto Jochi (1772-1797), the fourth Jizaemon branchline master of the Goto school. He inherited the title and became fifth master of this branchline.
