A HAGIYA SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (DATED EARLY SPRING 1860), SIGNED SEIROKEN HAGIYA KATSUHIRA WITH KAO

The oval iron plate has a polished surface and is carved in high relief and inlaid in gold and shibuichi. The decoration depicts two shishi gambolling beside rocks and a stream. The design extends to the reverse--height 7.4cm., width 6.9cm., thickness 4.5mm.

Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 137, dated April 15th, 1971.

Hagiya Katsuhira (1804-1886) was born in Mito, Hitachi Province. He was the son of Hagiya Katsufusa (b. 1798). He emerged as one of the most skilled Mito artists and was very popular with Victorian travelers to Japan in the early Meiji era.
