A YAMASHIRO HASEBE KO-WAKIZASHI
NAMBOKUCHO PERIOD (CIRCA 1335), ATTRIBUTED TO HASEBE KUNISHIGE

Configuration (sugata): flat (hira-zukuri) with tri-bevelled back (mitsu-mune); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 1 sun, 1 bu (33.4cm); curvature (sori): very slight koshi-zori of 0.4cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): itame-mokume.
Tempering pattern (hamon): o-midare/gonome in nioi and nie and with some hitatsura.
Point (boshi): extremely long and finger-like, with a long kaeri.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): funagata; file marks (yasurime): kiri-yasuri; end (nakagojiri): squared (kirijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): three; signature (mei): none (mumei).

Shirasaya.

Aikuchi-koshirae, the mounts 18th century, comprising: a black lacquer flute-form (fuemaki) saya; a tsuka mounted with fine same and a pair of gold Goto school menuki modelled as triple aoi-mon; a shakudo nanako kogai and kozuka each emlazoned with a gilt triple aoi-mon, forming a mitokoro-mono with the menuki--length of koshirae 57.4cm.; length of tsuka 14.7cm.; length of kogai 21.3cm.; length of kozuka 9.6cm. Chip and slight damage to the saya.

Double lacquer storage box. The inner box decorated with a kiku-mon. Silk and brocade storage bags.

Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho token, no. 21796, dated Showa 31 (1956) and a tokubetsu kicho koshirae certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no number, dated Showa 34 (1959).
