A BIZEN OSAFUNE TACHI
KAMAKURA PERIOD (CIRCA 1320), SIGNED BIZEN OSAFUNE [NO] JU KAGEMITSU
Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and small point (ko-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 1 sun, 6 bu (65.6cm.); curvature (sori): strong koshi-zori of 2.5cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.5cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): thickly packed small wood grain pattern (ko-itame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): basically a medium suguba, but with some notare and small shallow swells (ko-gonome) and an expansive display of clove-like patterns (choji), all in bright nioi and highlighted by 'legs' ashi.
Point (boshi): small and rounded (ko-maru).
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): regular, slender, upturned and slightly shortened (suriage); the surface with a deep brown and slightly moist-looking patina; file marks (yasurime): sujikai; end (nakagojiri): rounded (kurijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): two; signature (tachimei): Bizen Osafune [no] ju Kagemitsu.
Shirasaya with attestation by Sato Kanzan.
Kazari tachi koshirae, Kamakura style, Edo period, 19th century, comprising: a saya covered with gold foil decorated in gold lacquer with ho-o and foliage; full gilt mounts repoussé with stylized foliage and set with cabochon stones, unsigned--length of koshirae 104.2cm.; length of tsuka 26.4 cm.
