A BIZEN OSAFUNE SCHOOL YOROIDOSHI TANTO
MUROMACHI PERIOD, DATED BUMMEI (1469-1487), SIGNED BISHU OSAFUNE KATSUMITSU

Configuration (sugata): flat (hira-zukuri) with shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and extremely thick (1.1cm. in the tang); length (nagasa): 8 sun, 4.5 bu (25.4cm.); curvature (sori): very slight uchizori; carving (horimono): outside: kurikara; inside: kaku-dome bo-hi with two bonji.
Forging pattern (jihada): ko-mokume/itame.
Tempering pattern (hamon): irregular shallow swells (gonome midare) with clove-like patterns (choji).
Point (boshi): extremely short kaeri.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): unshortened (ubu); file marks (yasurime): sujikai; end (nakagojiri): rounded (kurijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): two (one plugged); signature (mei): Bishu Osafune Katsumitsu, dated Bunmei (?) (1469-1487), second month.

Shirasaya.

Aikuchi koshirae comprising: a black lacquer saya; a same tsuka mounted with gilt and copper menuki formed as Fukurokuju and Jurojin, and a horn fuchi-kashira; a shakudo nanako kozuka decorated with a gold bouquet of narcissus, unsigned--length of koshirae 40cm.; length of tsuka 10.8cm.; length of kozuka 9.7cm.

Accompanied by a futsu kicho token certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 57964, dated Showa 36 (1961).
