THE DAI, MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1575), UNSIGNED; THE SHO, NAMBOKUCHO PERIOD (CIRCA 1340), SIGNED MIHARA [NO] JU MASAKIYO

Dai: Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 6 sun, 7 bu (50.7cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.2cm., increase in width of blade (fumbari): 0.8cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): masame.
Tempering pattern (hamon): notare hako-choji in nioi and ko-nie.
Point (boshi): flame-brushed tip (hakikake).
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): regular and unshortened (ubu); file marks (yasurime): kiri-yasuri; end (nakagojiri): rounded (kurijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): two; signature (mei): unsigned (mumei).

Sho: Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 6 sun, 7 bu (34.6cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.2cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 0.6cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): fine mokume.
Tempering pattern (hamon): suguba.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): o-suriage; file marks (yasurime): new (kiri-yasuri); end (nakagojiri): squared (kirijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (orikaeshimei): Mihara [no] ju Masakiyo.

Shirasaya.

Daisho koshirae comprising: a saya executed in black lacquer with silver and gold lacquer designs of waves and half-submerged deformed wheels (katawa-guruma) and kiri; both tsuka are mounted with shakudo menuki formed as three cranes gathering and shibuichi fuchi-kashira, the dai decorated with Dankei, unsigned, and the sho with a sage dreaming and butterflies, signed Shokonshi Katsuyuki (fl. 1750); the shibuichi tsuba are carved ÿn high relief and inlaid in gold, shibuichi and shakudo, the dai with the Three Heroes of Han, the reverse with carved flowering plum, signed Sekijoken (Taizan) Oyama Motozane with kao (Sekijoken Motozane I, 1741-1830, of Mito in Hitachi), the sho decorated with Prince Han Shin demonstrating his humility by crawling through the legs of fishermen, signed Koryuken Kaneyuki (1740-1776, 2nd Hamano school master); a shibuichi kozuka depicting Kung fu-tse, signed Shunno hogen Nobuyoshi with kao (1807-1878)--length of koshirae 81.6cm. and 59.2cm.; length of tsuka 20.6cm. and 14cm.; tsuba height 7.2cm. and 6.5cm., width 6.6cm. and 6.1cm., thickness 7.5mm. and 7mm.; length of kozuka 9.7cm.
