MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1490-1530), SIGNED KANENAGA
Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and large point (o-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 2 sun, 6 bu (68.9cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.5cm.;increase in width of blade (fumbari): 0.6cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): itame mokume with slight masame in the omote monouchi.
Tempering pattern (hamon): suguba with both notare and o-notare in Shizu style and with 'swept sands' (sunagashi) and some kinsuji, both generally executed ara-nie, some being rather blatant, especially in the monouchi.
Point (boshi): quiet midare-komi with some hakikake.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): regular and slightly shortened (suriage); file marks (yasurime): takano ha; end (nakagojiri): iriyamagata; holes (mekugi-ana): two; signature (katanamei): Kanenaga.
Shirasaya.
Uchigatana-koshirae, comprising: a textured brown-black saya mounted with a silver kojiri with gold insects; a tsuka mounted with gold and shakudo nanako menuki formed as dragons and a shakudo ishime fuchi-kashira decorated with gilt dragons chasing flaming pearls; an iron Kinai of Echizen tsuba pierced with a design of sword tangs by famous makers, unsigned (rusted)--length of koshirae 97cm.; length of tsuka 22.4cm.; tsuba height 8.5cm., width 8cm., thickness 8mm. Slight dent to the saya.
