A SURUGA SHIMADA OSARAKU-ZUKURI TANTO
MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1455), ATTRIBUTED TO GISUKE
Configuration (sugata): osaraku-zukuri; length (nagasa): 9 sun, 3 bu (28.2cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.2cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): rough wood grain pattern (itame). Tempering pattern (hamon): irregular undulations (gonome midare) in nie and nioi with nioi predominant.
Point (boshi): midare-komi with no kaeri.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): tanago-bara; file marks (yasurime): new (kiri-yasuri); end (nakagojiri): small and rounded (ko kurijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): two (one triple); signature (mei): unsigned (mumei), Keicho habaki made to simulate a Keicho gold koban and its kiri stamps.
Shirasaya with attestation signed Shunsui (Kasumi Toshio).
Koshirae comprising: a saya of aogai nashiji with spiralling black lacquer streaks, mounted with a flush silver kojiri engraved with a dragon amidst clouds; a tsuka mounted with a pair of gold menuki formed as hollyhock and stems and Yokoya school shakudo fuchi-kashira decorated with gold shishi and peony; an Edo kinko hamadashi tsuba inlaid with a boy flying a kite; a Yokoya school kozuka decorated with a gold dragon, inscribed Sorin with kao.-- Length of koshirae 42.6cm.; length of tsuka 11.1cm.; tsuba height 5.3cm., width 4.1cm., thickness 8mm.; length of kozuka 9.6cm. Slight chips to the saya.

Accompanied by a futsu kicho token certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no number, dated Showa 34 (1959).
