AN IWASHIRO MUTSU SANZEN KATANA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1660), SIGNED MUTSU DAIJO SANZEN NAGAMICHI, ATTRIBUTED TO NAGAMICHI I AND WITH CUTTING ATTESTATION

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 2 sun, 9 bu (69.5cm.); curvature (sori): extremely shallow koshi-zori of 0.7cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 0.9cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): fine and dense 'pear-skin' (nashiji).
Tempering pattern (hamon): small irregular undulations (ko-gonome midare) in active nie, with strong accumulations of ara-nie in the areas of lowest convexity.
Point (boshi): slight gonome-komi with (ko-maru) and medium kaeri.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): slender, tapering and possibly shortened a very small amount; file marks (yasurime): new (kiri-yasuri); end (nakagojiri): rounded (kurijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): two; signature (katanamei): Mutsu Daijo Sanzen Nagamichi; inside: Futatsu do saidan Kamitoya-shi kore-o tamesu [Mr. Kamitoya tested this to cut down two bodies].

Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho token certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 144639, dated Showa 43 (1968).
