AN EDO SHITAHARA KO-WAKIZASHI
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1665), SIGNED SAGAMI [NO] KAMI FUJIWARA HIROSHIGE
Configuration (sugata): ohira-zukuri with shallow peaked back (iori-mune); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 1 sun, 8 bu (35.8cm.).
Forging pattern (jihada): prominent and rather heavy wood grain (itame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): shallow toran with upheavals of komidare with 'swept sands' (sunagashi) and some 'legs' (ashi) in nie and some ara-nie.
Point (boshi): flame-brushed tip (hakikake).
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): tanago-bara; file marks (yasurime): indistinct; end (nakagojiri): ha-agari kurijiri; holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (katanamei): Sagami [no] Kami Fujiwara Hiroshige.
Shirasaya.
Wakizaki koshirae comprising: a black lacquer saya inlaid with thin strips of aogai and slivers of the cross-sections of small shells; a tsuka mounted with a sentoku fuchi-kashira deeply carved with waves, unsigned and a pair of kabuto menuki; a silvered sentoku tsuba pierced and molded with a dragon amidst clouds, unsigned; a shiiremono kozuka.-- Length of koshirae 67.2cm.; length of tsuka 17.1cm.; tsuba height 6.8cm., width 6.6cm., thickness 8mm.; length of kozuka 6.9cm.

Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho token certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 371238, dated Showa 54 (1979); and a futsu kicho koshirae certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 132, dated Showa 54 (1979).
