A OSAKA KII KATANA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1660), SIGNED MUTSU [NO] KAMI TACHIBANA TAMEYASU

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and sharply rounded (fukura-tsuku) medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 5 sun, 2 bu (76.4cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.7cm., increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.1cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): extremely tight mokume approaching a 'pear-skin' surface (nashiji) in its fineness.
Tempering pattern (hamon): o-notare toran with some clove patterns (choji), all in nie-deki and with a single 'pearl' on the outside.
Point (boshi): small and rounded (ko-maru) with an insinuation of hakikake.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): slender, tapering and unshortened (ubu); file marks (yasurime): sujikai; end (nakagojiri): rounded (kurijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (katanamei): Mutsu [no] Kami Tachibana Tameyasu.

Shirasaya.

Tachi-koshirae comprising: a saya of black lacquer with an ishime surface; the tsuka mounted with large shakudo and gold kenuki style menuki in the form of the jo-mon of the Kato family; an iron mokko form Tembo tsuba decorated with hot stamp punchwork of Chinese Kin kanji characters and gold dots, unsigned; the remainder of the fittings in copper with an ishime surface.-- Length of the koshirae 106.7cm.; length of tsuka 26.5 cm.; tsuba height 9.8cm., width 8.6cm., thickness 8mm. Minor chips, dents and scratches to the saya.
