EDO PERIOD, DATED 1848, SIGNED DAIJO DENKA TAIMEI-NI-YORI KORE-O-TSUKURU TOKORO-NARI, ONTACHI-NO SOE-SAKU NARI WITH KAO/KIMI BANZAI SHICHI-JU O TO NAOTANE WITH KAO

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 3 sun, 6 bu (71.6cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 2.2cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.1cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): itame-chirimen.
Tempering pattern (hamon): gonome-midare with some 'swept sands' (sunagashi), 'legs' (ashi) and kinsuji.
Point (boshi): small and rounded (ko-maru) midare-komi.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): unshortened (ubu); file marks (yasurime): kesho-yasuri; end (nakagojiri): rounded (kurijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (tachimei): inside: Daijo denka taimei-ni-yori kore-o tsukuru tokoro-nari, ontachi-no soe-saku nari and kao; outside: Kimi Banzai shichi-ju O To Naotane and kao, dated Bunka 5 (1848), 2nd month, an auspicious day.

Shirasaya with attestations signed Kunzan (Homma Junji), and Sato Kanzan.

Higo katana-koshirae, comprising: a dark red lacquer ishime saya decorated with sunken black lacquer designs of kiri and jo-mon of the Kobori family, mounted with iron Nishigaki Kanshiro style o-kojiri, and koiguchi delicately decorated with gold nunome kiri with stylized fronds and foliage, unsigned; the tsuka mounted with gold menuki formed as triple Kobori jo-mon and fuchi kashira decorated en suite to the saya fittings; an iron mokko tsuba decorated with gold nunome molded designs of dragonflies, unsigned, Jingo School, 3rd or 4th generation.-- Length of koshirae 102.3cm.; length of tsuka 26.2cm.; tsuba height 7.8cm., width 7.6cm., thickness 5mm.
