EDO PERIOD, DATED 1854, SIGNED HONO GION TENNO SHAZEN BUNGO [NO] KUNI TAKAHASHI NAGAHIDE KORE[O] KIN TSUKURU

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 3 shaku, 2 sun, 1 bu (96.7cm.); curvature (sori): strong torii-zori of 3.5cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.0cm.; carving (horimono): maru-dome bo-hi on both sides.
Forging pattern (jihada): wood grain pattern (itame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): undulations (gonome) in nie.
Point (boshi): flame-brushed tip (hakikake).
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): slender and unshortened (ubu); file marks (yasurime): kesho-yasuri; end (nakagojiri): rounded (kurijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): two; signature (tachimei): Hono Gion Tenno shazen Bungo [no] Kuni Takahashi Nagahide koreo kin tsukuru (A presentation in front of the Gion Shrine, Takahashi Nagahide of Bungo respectfully forged this); inside: dated Kaiei 6 (1854), 2nd month, an auspicious day; Suke tsuchi shakei Nagayoshi Nagafusa [no] monjin Yukihide Shizunaga Yoshihide (Helped in hammering with elder brothers Nagayoshi and Nagafusa pupils of Yukihide, Shizunaga and Yoshihide).
