ANTIQUE DEMANTOID GARNET AND DIAMOND PIN

Set with a cushion-cut demantoid garnet weighing approximately 9.89 cts., flanked on each side by an old European-cut diamond, within a single-cut diamond geometric frame, mounted in silver-topped gold

During the nineteenth century, a new variety of garnet was discovered in the Russian Ural Mountains. This green stone came to be known as demantoid, a derivation of the dutch word 'demant' which means diamond, because of it's extrodinary brilliance. It's rich ranges from dark green to yellowish-green, and is often confused with emeralds and olivines. The popularity of this stone reached its zenith at the turn of the century when it was used to shape details of zoomorphic jewelry - most commenly, lizard, frog and butterfly pins - as well as to accent diamond lapel watches. Demantoid garnets usually range in size up to one carat. The 9.89 carat stone featured in this brooch is exceptionally rare.
