Lot Essay

Grant was, at this time, Commander of the Army of the Potomac and dug-in in Virginia to break the back of the Confederacy. To Grant's left is John A. Rawlins, Grant's Chief of Staff; seated to his right, his son, Lieutenant Frederick Grant; in front, M.B. Ryan; and far left, Grant's military secretary, Ely S. Parker, a full-blooded Indian and grand-nephew of Red Jacket, chief of the tribe Six Nations.
