Lot Essay

Brooks secured an apprenticeship with Barbara Morgan with the help of Arthur Rothstein and then became an assistant to Gjon Mili for a year. Later, while staff photographer for a newspaper chain in New Jersey, she covered an assignment for Standard Oil which led to occasional assignments for the next 2 years. In 1951, she became the only woman staff photographer hired by Look Magazine, a position she kept until the end of publication in 1971.
