The popularity of this image, conceived as an icon of American defense and the basis for the memorial statue in Washington, D.C. makes it one of the most widely reproduced images of the 20th century. A number of enlargements were made for distribution among participants in the battle. This vintage print of the famed flag raising on March 2, 1945 is extremely rare.
