Lot Essay

Strand was exposed to the theories of pictorial photography by Alfred Stieglitz and the thrust of his early publications, Camera Notes and Camera Work, as well as through his membership in the Camera Club of New York in 1908. As early as 1910, Strand's work began to reflect changes away from a pictorial vision; by 1914, the break was complete. This image is regarded as one of the most fully developed examples of Strand's few pictorial works. This unique print is one of only 4 or 5 other images printed from his 1911 trip to Europe.
