A FINE MAHOGANY LONGCASE CLOCK WITH ASTRONOMICAL INDICATIONS AND PERPETUAL CALENDAR
SIGNED ON THE MOVEMENT, TIFFANY & CO., MAKERS, PATENT NOV. 7, 1882

The plinth supporting the moulded panelled case applied with spindles, the trunk with moulded columns supporting moved crenelated cornice enclosing repoussé gilt metal dome and minaret-style finials, the arched shaped glazed panel below the gilt dial with annular chapter ring, the lower year calendar ring engraved with the Signs of the Zodiac enclosing equation of time, aperture for phases of the moon, dials for day, date, and leap year, with stylized floral spandrels.

Lot Essay

This clock is one of two known examples in this style. The other example is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is illustrated by Marshall B. Davidson and Elizabeth Stillinger, The American Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1985, p. 192, fig. 301; and in the exhibition catalogue 19th-Century America, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, April 16-September 7, 1970, fig. 229.
